Petrol has been cut four times in the past week (Rs 5.16 on 20 October, Rs 2.71 on 22 October, Rs 1.60 on 23 October, with an 88 paisa rise on 21 October in between). Diesel has gone the other way: up on 21, 22, 23 and now 24 October, a total of Rs 4.39 a litre since 20 October. Diesel moves goods, buses and tractors, so it is the price that feeds into transport fares and food costs.

What it costs you

At the notified retail price, a 40-litre tank of petrol still costs about Rs 15,108, and a motorcyclist filling 10 litres pays about Rs 3,777. A 40-litre diesel fill now costs about Rs 15,746, around Rs 76 more than on Friday. A truck taking 200 litres of diesel pays about Rs 78,732, roughly Rs 382 more than yesterday.

Why the price now changes almost every day

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced on 17 July that petrol and diesel prices would be fixed daily, and the federal cabinet gave OGRA the job of setting them. Changes follow international oil prices and the exchange rate. This weekend's notification fixes prices for three days at once instead of one. Brent crude climbed above $111 a barrel on Thursday 22 October on tension around Iran (our story), which is pushing diesel up even as petrol eases. Dealers have asked the petroleum minister to review daily pricing because of stock losses (our story).

Taxes still carried in the price

According to Dawn, the government still collects about Rs 114 a litre in taxes and duties on petrol and about Rs 100 a litre on diesel. That levy is the target of Jamaat-e-Islami's protest campaign, whose third phase began on 23 October.

Retail price vs PSO ex-depot price

The prices above are the notified retail prices at the pump. Our petrol price data page and diesel price data page track PSO's ex-depot Karachi price, which is read from PSO's own site and can differ slightly from the pump price. Both are updated daily.
